Resilience refers to one's ability to withstand challenge in adversity. It combines other mastered traits such as flexibility, adaptation, patience, creativity, perspective, and perseverance. It goes beyond whether a person decides to quit or keep going at a particular task or project. Resilience refers to being able to maintain a healthy state of mind when unforeseen challenges and difficulties arise which they inevitably do. It refers equally to the ability to withstand and make use of other peoples criticism. The resilient individual is not deterred from his or her chosen path when he or she encounters hardships. A key component of resilience is the ability to find an alternate route. It's important to understand that it is not merely pushing back that's important, but being able to go or around when necessary. Think of flowing water. It may not be able to flow uphill, but it always finds another way.
